When you donate a vehicle through MotorCity Wheels in Detroit, your gift starts and ends right here at home. We send a local tow operator directly to your address—whether you’re in Midtown, Corktown, Greektown, East English Village, or out in suburbs like Dearborn, Southfield, Warren, or Sterling Heights. Your car is picked up at your door, and the proceeds help fund Heritage for the Blind’s mission to support people who are blind or visually impaired, including right here in Michigan.
The process is simple: you schedule a free pickup, a nearby towing partner comes to your driveway or curb, and we handle the rest. In denser Detroit neighborhoods with tighter streets, we coordinate the right truck and timing. In outlying areas—from Novi and Troy to downriver communities like Taylor and Wyandotte, and even farther out toward Ann Arbor or Port Huron—we plan routes so your pickup is efficient and hassle-free. You don’t pay a dime for towing, and you receive the paperwork you need for a potential tax deduction. It’s an easy way to turn a car you don’t need into local support for your neighbors living with vision loss.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and where in Metro Detroit it is
Start online or by phone with your basic vehicle details (year, make, model, condition) and exact location—whether that’s a driveway in Ferndale, a parking lot in Downtown Detroit, or a side street in Hamtramck. The more accurate your information, the smoother we can match you with the right tow operator for your specific neighborhood or suburb.
2. Choose a pickup day that works for your schedule
We’ll work with you to select a convenient pickup window. In busy parts of Detroit—like Midtown, New Center, or around the Lodge and I‑75—we may offer specific time ranges to avoid congestion. In suburbs like Livonia, Grosse Pointe, or Rochester Hills, we’ll coordinate around your availability and local traffic patterns so the tow driver can arrive when it’s easiest for you.
3. Prepare the keys, title, and access to the vehicle
Before pickup, remove personal belongings and have your keys and Michigan title ready if available. Make sure the vehicle isn’t blocked in by other cars or snow. If it’s in a garage, alley, apartment lot, or tight Detroit neighborhood street, let us know in advance so the driver arrives with the right truck and plan to safely access your vehicle.
4. Meet the tow driver—or arrange a no-contact handoff
On pickup day, a local towing partner will arrive at your Detroit or Metro Detroit address, verify the vehicle, and have you sign the release if you’re home. If you can’t be there, we can often arrange a no-contact pickup by coordinating where to find the keys and documents, depending on your building rules and your city or suburban parking situation.
5. We tow it free, process the donation, and send your receipt
Your vehicle is towed at no cost to you anywhere in Metro Detroit or surrounding Michigan communities. MotorCity Wheels processes the donation, and the proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. You’ll receive a tax receipt—typically for at least $500—with instructions for using IRS Form 1098‑C if the deduction exceeds $500.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight Detroit streets, alleys, and one-way blocks
Tip: Many Detroit neighborhoods have narrow streets, alley access, or cars parked bumper-to-bumper. Let us know if your vehicle is in an alley, behind a house, or on a tight one-way street. We’ll plan the right size truck or ask you to move it to a more accessible spot if possible, so the tow operator can hook up quickly and safely.
Apartment/condo lots, permit parking, and HOAs
Tip: Downtown, Midtown, and suburban complexes often have gate codes, assigned spaces, or HOA rules about tow trucks. Before your pickup, check if we need a parking pass, visitor registration, or gate access. Provide any codes or instructions in advance so the driver can enter without delays or risk of being turned away by security or management.
Very rural or outlying addresses beyond core Metro Detroit
Tip: If you’re outside the main Metro Detroit corridor—farther toward Flint, Jackson, or in more rural parts of southeast Michigan—pickup is still free but may require extra routing time. Share clear directions and landmarks, and we’ll set realistic expectations on available pickup days so you’re not left waiting or surprised by a longer scheduling window.
No title or unclear ownership situation
Tip: In Michigan, having the title makes donation and transfer much smoother. If you can’t locate it or the vehicle is in a deceased relative’s name, tell us upfront. We’ll explain general options and what many donors do, but you may also need to check with the Michigan Secretary of State or seek legal guidance for complex ownership issues.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If a standard at-home pickup is tricky—for example, your car is in an underground garage Downtown, blocked in a tight alley in Southwest Detroit, or stored at a shop in a suburb with strict lot rules—we can often adjust. In some situations, we may arrange to meet you at a nearby street with better tow access, or coordinate with your mechanic, storage lot, or HOA to release the vehicle. If that still isn’t workable, we can talk through timing, temporary parking options, or whether a short personal drive to a more accessible location will make the donation possible.
Detroit pickup coverage
MotorCity Wheels serves the full Detroit and Metro Detroit region: from Downtown, Midtown, and the Villages to neighborhoods like Rosedale Park, Jefferson-Chalmers, and Boston-Edison, plus suburbs such as Dearborn Heights, Oak Park, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, and Macomb Township. We also reach outlying Michigan communities as scheduling allows. Busy urban areas may have faster pickups due to nearby trucks, while more remote addresses might need extra routing time. For Michigan donors, you’ll typically sign your MI title over to the charity or its authorized agent and remove your plates; the Michigan Secretary of State generally advises returning plates or transferring them to another vehicle.
