How the car donation process works
Start Your Detroit Donation With MotorCity Wheels
Begin by telling MotorCity Wheels about your car, truck, van, SUV, motorcycle, or other eligible vehicle. You do not need to have a perfect, running vehicle to make a difference. Donors across Detroit and Metro Detroit can request free towing from neighborhoods and suburbs including Downtown, East English Village, Ferndale, Grosse Pointe, Taylor, Troy, and beyond. The goal is to make donating easy, respectful, and mission-focused, so you can support Heritage for the Blind without trying to sell the vehicle yourself.
Schedule Free Pickup at a Convenient Location
After your donation is started, free tow pickup is scheduled at a time and place that works for you. The vehicle can usually be picked up from a home, apartment lot, workplace, repair shop, or other accessible location in the Detroit area. You will receive clear instructions about the title and keys before the tow truck arrives. There is no need to bring the vehicle anywhere or pay for towing. MotorCity Wheels keeps the process straightforward so your generosity can move quickly toward helping the Heritage mission.
Your Vehicle Is Sold to Create Mission Funding
Once the vehicle is picked up, it is processed and sold. The gross sale price determines the value reported for many donated vehicles, especially when a vehicle sells for more than $500. Most importantly for mission-motivated donors, 100-percent of the vehicle sale proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind. That means your unused car is converted into funding for services designed to support people who are blind or visually impaired, instead of sitting in a driveway, garage, or repair lot.
Proceeds Support Services for Blind and Visually Impaired People
Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446, uses vehicle donation proceeds to help fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Support includes connecting individuals with government benefit programs and resources that may improve stability, health access, housing support, utility assistance, and daily living. These may include SSI, SSDI, LIHEAP, Section 8, Medicare Extra Help, and Medicaid. Donors who want to understand the benefit-screening side of the mission can visit nhftb.org/finder to check eligibility for assistance programs.
Receive the Tax Documents You Need
Because Heritage for the Blind is a qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446, eligible donations may be tax deductible for donors who itemize deductions. If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, your deduction is generally based on the gross vehicle sale price and reported using IRS Form 1098-C. You should keep your donation receipt and any tax forms with your records. MotorCity Wheels helps make the paperwork clear, while you should consult a tax professional for advice about your personal filing situation.
